It has been found that “men demonstrate higher degrees of liking for the jazz, dance, rock, and functional metastyles, whereas women demonstrate higher liking for the classical, mainstream, folk, alternative rock, Latino, and MOBO (music of black origin) metastyles. This provides some support for the prediction that women should prefer “softer” musical styles” (North 205). Although it is unclear as to why this phenomena occurs, one thing is for certain: men and women's differing musical preferences are caused first by differences in gender. Again, the quality of the music itself is not at stake. Rather, it is the social construction of what men and women should listen to according to society that leads to differences in musical taste. | Let's face it. Gender plays a role in almost every aspect of our lives from determining how much we get paid to what roles we play in relationships and our households. Why should musical preference be exempt from gender association? It's true. Men and women hear music differently, tending to like different genres of music just because of their gender (hey! Maybe that's why my dad and brother always hate on my musical taste...). Studies show that men tend to prefer "harder" genres of music such as rock while women prefer "softer" genres of music such as pop or classical music. |
